The Student of the Year Award, University WIL, has been awarded to Phoenix Seelochan, a fourth-year student completing her HBA Combined Specialist in Economics and Political Science at University of Toronto.
Through her internship with the NATO Association of Canada, Phoenix has demonstrated exceptional leadership, analytical expertise, and a deep commitment to global security and sustainability. As Program Editor for the Environment, Climate Change, and Security Program, she has published critical analyses on the intersection of climate change and global security, shaping policy discussions at high levels.
Her passion for international peacebuilding took her to the 4th Global Peace Summit at the UN Conference Centre in Thailand, where she engaged with world leaders, genocide survivors, and Nobel Prize nominees to develop actionable solutions for global conflicts. Her ability to build meaningful connections led to the recruitment of new research fellows for NATO publications and a partnership with Global Peace Index founder Steve Killelea.
On campus, Phoenix fosters inclusivity and academic engagement as Vice President of Finance for UTM Campus Connections and Academics Director for the Undergraduate Economics Council, bridging students with faculty and industry professionals. Her project management skills were further showcased in her pivotal role in executing NATO’s “Music of NATO” event, where she worked closely with diplomats, performers, and venue staff to bring the initiative to life.
Phoenix’s drive, adaptability, and strategic vision have set a new benchmark for excellence in work-integrated learning (WIL). Her dedication to policymaking, climate advocacy, and international diplomacy is already making an impact, and there is no doubt that she will continue to be a force for change in both local and global communities. Le Prix de l'étudiante de l'année – AIT universitaire a été attribué à Phoenix Seelochan, une étudiante en quatrième année qui poursuit un HBA en spécialisation combinée en économie et en sciences politiques à l’Université de Toronto.
Lors de son stage au sein de la NATO Association of Canada, Phoenix a fait preuve d’un leadership exceptionnel, de compétences analytiques avancées et d’un profond engagement pour la sécurité mondiale et la durabilité. En tant que rédactrice en chef du programme Environnement, changement climatique et sécurité, elle a publié des analyses essentielles sur l’intersection entre le changement climatique et la sécurité mondiale, influençant les discussions politiques à des niveaux élevés.
Sa passion pour la construction de la paix internationale l’a menée au 4e Sommet mondial pour la paix au Centre des conférences de l'ONU en Thaïlande, où elle a interagi avec des dirigeants mondiaux, des survivants de génocide et des lauréats du prix Nobel pour développer des solutions concrètes aux conflits mondiaux. Sa capacité à établir des liens significatifs a permis le recrutement de nouveaux chercheurs pour les publications de l'OTAN et un partenariat avec le fondateur de l’Index mondial de la paix, Steve Killelea.
Sur le campus, Phoenix favorise l'inclusivité et l’engagement académique en tant que vice-présidente des finances de UTM Campus Connections et directrice académique du Conseil des personnes étudiantes en économie de premier cycle, servant de passerelle entre les étudiants, le corps professoral et les professionnels de l’industrie. Ses compétences en gestion de projets ont également été démontrées lors de son rôle clé dans l’organisation de l'événement “Music of NATO”, où elle a collaboré avec des diplomates, des artistes et le personnel du lieu pour donner vie à l'initiative.
L'initiative, l’adaptabilité et la vision stratégique de Phoenix ont établi une nouvelle référence d'excellence dans l'apprentissage integré au travail (AIT). Son engagement envers l'élaboration de politiques, la défense du climat et la diplomatie internationale a déjà un impact, et il ne fait aucun doute qu’elle continuera à être un moteur de changement tant au niveau local que mondial.
